I plan to put area rugs over my new engineered hardwood floors. I understand that in high use areas, like entries, a rubber pad should be placed under the rug. Otherwise, movement over the floor will cause damage similar to sandpaper.

However, I will have a large area rug (9x13) that will be held down by a heavy coffee table and I don't expect it to move. It will also not be in a high traffic area. Should I still put a rubber pad underneath to protect the floor?

I would never use a rubber pad. It could trap moisture like a greenhouse, causing bad things to happen under it.

Felt cushion is a better solution.

By rubber pad, I meant the meshed ones that are normally put under rugs on other surfaces. Do they sweat, too?

I don't see why you would need it under a piece of furniture. I've often been asked what is the best to use under area rugs to prevent slippage. Anybody know the answers? wgourlay's choice is the only one I know of. Any particular brand come to mind?

Breathable, screen type rubber underlay is fine. I was thinking rubber waffle padding.

Thanks Floorguy and Ken Fisher. A screen type underlay comes free as a promotional item with the 9 x 13 rug I ordered. I will cut it to fit the 5 1/2 x 8 rug in my entryway to inhibit movement and keep it from slipping.
