For an effective gloss, first thing to do is to free all wood surfaces from lint, dirt, grease, wax, oil and old paint. Refinishing old wood that has minimal wear: If the surface is intact but is just worn, lightly sand the surface using 220/320 grit sandpaper. Vacuum and tack the surface.
Refinishing old wood with a badly damaged surface: You will need to remove all the old finish and then thoroughly sand the wood using a 100 or 120 grit paper or screen with 100/120 grit new screen.
The sealing process may be reduced to one coat of hard sealer as some finish still remains in the woods fibers. If your first coat of hard sealer is quickly absorbed then do a second coat before applying topcoats. If you plan to add stain, apply one coat of clear hard sealer and then add stain to your second coat.
