They had their floor resanded a year ago and the contractor doing the work used Bona Stain and Streetshoe right over the stain. Since then they have remodeled their kitchen and now have several places where bare wood is showing thus it needing to be resanded and restained. The problem comes in is my company uses Duraseal stains and Glitsa Waterborne products. My company is part of a distributor and since we dont carry any basic coatings stuff I have to source it elsewhere at a higher cost. I use Glitsa waterbased (Infinity II and HP) every day and know everything about how it performs, how it lays out and so on. I have never used Streetshoe and I am very skeptical of it based on what I've read about it. I am more comfortable with HP but my homeowner is very insistent on using streetshoe. (there is flooring in the Kit/Din/Foyer/Half Bath/Pantry. The floor we're resanding is only the Kit/Din. The Homeowner knows it is going to be a little different color and is okay with it.) I'm not impressed with the streetshoe thats on the floor now. I can see roller marks all over the place and really don't want to use it.. any ideas or info? BTW: I've used Bona Traffic and Mega, Synteko Extra, Diamond Shield, Starting Line/Wearmax, Last N Last Synergy and Grand, and for the last 4-5 years I've been using Glitsa Infinity II, HP, and Glitsamax. Out of all of them, IMO, Glitsa's products are the most forgiving with bona being second.

As I see it, you have three options. Choose not to do the job, do the job with Street Shoe, or talk the client into using the finish you prefer. Street Shoe is not a "bad" finish. Some guys actually prefer it. I question some of the claims the manufacturer has made for it. If you are uncomfortable with using it, then let another contractor do the job.

I think I can coat with just about anything... Its just not convenient to use products my company doesnt carry. I use a lightweight T-Bar and Foam Brush to coat waterbase. I'm assuming based on the "claims" that it should dry streak-free. Thats my biggest fear. Some of the other finishes I've used dried too fast to let the applicator marks to flow out. (ie: synteko extra emulsion and Starting Line from wearmax). I'll give it a whirl.. If the homeowners are okay with the finish job the other guy did I should have no problems. Is Streetshoe technically a 2 component finish or is it a 1 component with an optional cross-linker?

Street Shoe by Basic is a two component finish that uses an aziridine crosslinker, similar to BONA Pacific Strong. It is slightly thicker in viscosity than Strong but thinner than Traffic. I find it somewhat tempermental. Be sure not to shake the finish and only use the newer catalyst/crosslinker. Shoe can bubble easy. I wouldn't roll it. T-bar at 500-600 ft per gallon. Good luck.

Thanks for the info - Part of the floor I'm doing is just getting recoated. Is 220 grit psa strips okay to buff it with or go finer? Also how long after staining with Duraseal Quick Coat Stain could I coat this floor?

Street Shoe cannot be applied directly to the flooring. It needs a sealer first. Basic recommends either their Commercial Catalyzed Sealer or Emulsion. I like Emulsion but it will give a slight amber cast. You will need to make sure the stain is completely dry before coating. I don't care for Dura-Seal so I cannot say how long it will take for it to dry. Overnight at least I would guess. When re-coating Shoe, all you need to do is abrade it. 220 strips should work fine. Basic used to say 100 grit screens. Can you say "circular scratch marks everywhere"?

Yeah, I think thats a bit rough for a finish coat.. I'm not sure if the guy that did the floor before used a sealer or not. The floor looks kinda chalky. I personally like using an oil modified sealer on top of stain then waterbase as finish coats just because the color is a lot nicer. I'm planning on using emulsion for the first coat and street shoe for the last 2. I think the kitchen is about 250sf then I have another 160 to recoat. I should be good with 1 gallon of emulsion and 2 gallons of Street Shoe. Does Shoe get chunky when you stir in the catalyst like other 2 component finishes?

A trick I do with Strret-Shoe is to add about 4 ounces of water to the mix. Seems to slow down the set-up long enough to avoid the streaks you are concerned about. BASIC says you can add more, but I worry about degrading the strength of the product.
We use 2 Emulsion and 1 Street-Shoe as our standard finish, adding a second coat of Street-Shoe in high traffic areas. Works flawlessly for us. One thing I have found is always use a new applicator, a little more money on the job-costing side, but historically, always had trouble re-using an applicator. Cost is added to quote.
