My master bedroom is 12.5 x 10.5 with the short wall perpendicular to the joists. There are doors interrupting three walls. Wondering which direction to lay the 3 1/4" wide planks in the master bedroom. Same way as the current cedar planks which are parallel with the joists and parallel with the longest walls or perpendicular to the current cedar planks so the hardwood would be perpendicular to the joists and perpendicular to the 12.5 wall. On the joists is an inch of plywood made up to two 1/2" thick sheets. In the two bedrooms on the other side of the hall I plan to lay the planks in the same direction as the hall planks which will be parallel with the longest walls in the rooms and perpendicular to the joists. Video so you can see what I mean is at: http://youtu.be/o9E_F8S1920

The cedar planks in there now are only about 1/3 inch thick and were on the living room walls when we bought the house. They've lasted about 4 years.

OK. Thanks.

I'll be removing the cedar to replace it with hardwood.

Do you mean same way as the cedar that is in the master bedroom now? That would be perpendicular to the wood in the hallway and the other two bedrooms and it would be parallel with the joists.

Or do you mean same way as the hardwood that is in the hallway? That would be perpendicular to the joists.
