So I've got the carpet off, and am prepping the subfloor.

My wife has a sensitivity to petroleum products such as those used in the felt underlayment.

Is there an alternative to this? Would Tyvek or perhaps wax paper work as well?

Is luaun a good alternative to shingles?

Thanks as always guys.

I'm not a pro, but I put in about 150SF of prefinished in summer 2006 and I used the maroon heavy craft paper Home Despot sells. I didn't need a moisture barrier for my install (it was on a 2nd floor) so that may dictate what you need.

I've had no squeeks. It seems to be holding up well.

There are several moisture retarders on the market. I think the consensus from pro's would be Aquabar "B" made by Fortifiber.

The paper product that you can buy from Home Depot and some lumber yards is a good alternative to felt. Try not to buy a roll that is not round. If it is not round it does not lay flat when rolled out. The closer you get to the middle of the roll the worse it gets. It is not a show stopper but is a nuisance.

Thanks for the tips guys. FYI - From that PDF it looks like Aquabar contains asphalt too.

theres a paper made by fugi film. Its pretty much tht backing of pictures, but thinner. its as thick as the fortifiber paper. The name unfortunatley escapes me, I will call my distributor tommorow and ask. I use it all the time, but i just tell them I want the white paper and they know what I am talking about.

A 1st time DIY'r here.

I'm starting a project in my daughter's room using #15 felt. I've rolled out one strip of felt and almost have the first two rows of wood down. At this stage I can smell the felt and am concerned it will bother my daughter.

I'm thinking I should pull it back up, go get some red rosin and start again.

Before I do that, can ayone comment on the residual smells/odors/fumes of te efelt once the job is complete?

Have there ever been studies conducted on this issue?

Thanks,
Henry
