My wife and I just bought a house and we plan on installing hardwood. I pulled up the carpet to find 1/2" particle board. I understand that you are not supposed to nail down floors onto particle board, so I ripped that up too. Underneath was what look like 2x8's. look here:

Sorry for the crappy picture, but that's all I have at the moment. What would you guys suggest doing before I put down the floors? Do I put down plywood? How thick? If I put down 3/4 plywood and 3/4 floors, will it be too thick? Any advice would help.

Those are not T&G either if that helps.

I'd use 1/2 " cdx, running across the 2x''s, then the 3/4 solid. We only see that subfloor in the upstairs of the "mooutain chalets" they build up here.

Thanks for the reply. I just moved here to Vancouver, WA and I'm finding out that there is a huge problem with housing being built cheaply here. I can't wait to see what else I find!

Actually, that much 2 x 8 would cost a lot more than 3/4" Plywood, so while I don't know the reason, I wouldn't blame it on cost.
