We just installed new hardwood flooring. We have used two different types of flooring adhesive. The first was the only one sold at Lowe's and comes up from the flooring where it has been spread easily, add water and the swipe of a cloth.

The other adhesive was purchased when we ran out of the first. (I know, it is best to stick with one type, this was not an option). I am not sure the base of the second adhesive, but I know that would be helpful...

Well, after working on the flooring with the new adhesive we discovered that it is not easy to remove from the flooring. (Are we just messy, or does installing flooring usually result in getting the adhesive all over the floor?) It will not even come off hands unless peeled off.

Any tips or suggestions for removing this stuff? I am upset because the wood is beautiful, and I am fearful our brand new flooring is ruined.

Go back to Lowe's and in the paint section, you will find Mineral Spirits. Use this and then buff with a dry towel. The Mineral Spirits will not harm the prefinished flooring. Don't use paint thinner, use 100% mineral spirits. If that doesn't get it all, Mr. Clean Magic eraser.

Sounds like the second glue is a moisture-cure urethane adhesive. Most glue manufacturers also make a corresponding remover for their product. Usually comes in two components, first a remover, then a cleaner to remove the residue. Works best when the glue is fresh, but can be done with the added component of elbow grease and soaking time if the glue has dried.

The manufacturers name brand remover, is mineral spirits, with a very high mark up!! Hehehehe

If you don't use virgin mineral spirits it can dull the finish. I always use the recommended adhesive remover then the regular cleaner like Dennis suggested.

Ya me too, even if the stuff is identical, it has been my experience that flooring manufacturers will use any loophole available to void a warantee.

Update:
The mineral spirits work, but with a lot of elbow grease. There is glue everywhere, so it is taking forever to get them cleaned. I have to use a putty knife after letting the spirits sit just to get it up.

Careful, don't rub it so much, that you actually polish the spot, leaving a shinny place.

I am trying not to do any harm, but there is so much glue to remove (all over the floor) that right now all I am concerned with is to get it up.

Ahh, the joys of moisture-cured urethane adhesives!
