Here is the situation:

Kitchen remodel with 15 year old prefinished 3/4 2 1/4 strip flooring. It is desired to completely refinish this flooring to lighten the color and to extend the floor into another room where the adjoining wall has been removed. The current floor is laid out on a 45 degree angle and it is desireable to change the angle at some distance into the new contruction.

The plan at this point is to use new prefinished flooring to weave into the current floor and extend it about 6 feet to a header strip. After the header strip, the planks will run perpendicular to the header and the new area will be floored in the standard fashion parallel to the long wall.

The new prefinished stock was chosen to make it easier to hide where the new material is woven into the old. Do you feel this is helpful ?

The question now is on the new floor area - approx 24x13. Is there any reason not to use site finished flooring for this ? After installation the plan would be to sand and finish the entire floor area at one time.

How much of the edge bevel do you expect to remain after refinishing the prefinished (Honey Oak Type) old floor.

Since the bulk of the new floor will be isolated by the header strip, the assumption is that it would be OK to change to the site finished material at this point - right or wrong ?
