I have a floor that is squeeking all over. I have installed lots of hardwood floors, with the old Porta nailers and the newer compressor style flooring stapler (Bostich).
A customer picked out the flooring from a local distributor and when I went to install it, I carefully read the directions, made the appropriate climate changes to fall within the humidity range recommended and I even asked the flooring salesman if there were any special instructions to installing this floor. He didnt indicate anything to me, other than normal hard wood installation.
The first thing I noticed was the poor milling of the planks. They would vary in width from 1/32 to 1/16 of an inch, which made it hard to keep the floor tight. There were no planks longer than 4' and I figured that was common to the exotic species.
I used the same Bostich flooring stapler that I have used on a dozen other hardwood floors, without incident.
I had some problems with the staples curling, due to the density of the floor, but like any other time it happened, you set the staple, if possible or you pulled it out and put one in beside the old spot.
Now I have a problem with this floor squeeking all over.
Anyone have a similar problem or a sugestion as to why this is happening?
The home owner had the hardwood rep come out and he told the home owner that I should have used ribbed staples. As far as I know, they dont make a ribbed staple. They make cletes, that I could have used but nothing on the package indicated I should have used them instead and the sales rep never told me to go that route.
The floor never squeeked during installation or immediately after, that would have led me to use the cletes either.
I keep coming back to the fact that the planks were milled poorly and there were small gaps because of this. Then you have the expansion and contraction of an exotic.
Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks.

A few questions....
Manufacturer?
Plank thickness?
Moisture testing done? Acclimated?
Comparative RH & moisture tests done after squeeking?
Subfloor type & thickness?
Curling staples :? Staple gauge? Length?
Nailing schedule?
Underlayment type?
Are planks cupped?
Any visual difference compared to the day it was installed?

The gaps shouldn't have anything to do with squeeking. The rep is full of it about ribbed staples.

The rep is an idiot, plain and simple. Most likely the problem is lack of humidification in winter time. Makes the fasteners loose their grip causing squeeks. Did the homeowner comply with the relative humidity requirements per manufacturer and NWFA? If not then your off the hook.

Manufacturer? dont remember. They were plain white boxes
Plank thickness? 3/4
Moisture testing done? Acclimated? Yes. I made sure it was within the range suggested and had moisture reader on site, during installation.
Comparative RH & moisture tests done after squeeking? Not yet but thats my next step
Subfloor type & thickness? New home. 3/4 T&G OSB sturdifloor, glued to the I-joists
Curling staples :? Staple gauge? Length? Its the Bostich brand floor staples. Not sure the guage/length off the top of my head. Can check that info tomorrow. 1 5/8" if I recall correctly. 16 or 18 gauge, I believe.
Nailing schedule? Every 6 inches, roughly
Underlayment type? 30 lb felt
Are planks cupped? I didnt notice any cupping
Any visual difference compared to the day it was installed? No visual difference that I could tell

Thats what I thought

If the humidity levels are not correct, what can my customer do to curb this problem? Anything? Will the squeeks go away once the humidity level is correct? I would guess that it wont.

Helps a little but no guarantee it's going to be 100%. Had that happen on one of my jobs. They finally followed my original advice and got a humidifier. Luckily I always take pics with my meter and thermohygrometer when starting the jobs.
