I still can't believe I found this site. It's very useful.
However, after carefully searching through different forums and postings I coundn't find the answer to my question. I'm having my hardwood floors refinished. The person that's doing the job thought I wanted the floors to be kept natural, but I wanted them stained. He only learned this after he had already done all sanding. He had already prepared himself to use Bonaseal sealer and finishing. We are all kind of in a rush after two months of non stop serious home renovation, so he sent me to buy my own stain. The flooring supply store sold me Minwax oil base stain, and said that I would have no problem using water based finishing products. The stain has been applied and now the instructions on the Bonaseal container only talks about what other Bona products we could use. We HAVE TO use water base, my husband and I have been living through this big mess, and I won't make it through oil base product fumes and drying times. Can we use the Bonaseal? and then what? Do we have to seal? Can't we just go straight to a water based polyurethane? The more I read about wood floors the more confused I get .

Your flooring contractor should be the one to be answering these questions. But I like to help so here goes. You may certainly apply any Bona product over that Minwax stain BUT, there are some guidelines to doing it successfully. First, the stain must be ABSOLUTELY dry. I have found that sometimes, Minwax stains can take days to dry properly. Use fans and circulating air to speed things along. DON'T turn up the heat. That stain should be quite dry in 48 to 72 hours. Then, if the finisher is using BONA TRAFFIC, he should apply the TRAFFIC finish directly over the stain. A minimum of two coats are recommended. If the finisher is using MEGA or PACIFIC STRONG, the finisher should use the BONASEAL first, then apply the floor finish. It's all on BONA"S website and detailed instructions are on the finish containers.

Thank you so much for your reply. You can't imagine how valuable it is for me to get a second opinion from an expert.
I know the contractor should have known these things, and he's been trying to convince me that he does, but I think I might be dealing with a "flooring contractor wannabe". He doesn't seem to really know what he's doing or talking about. Unfortunately, I'm kinda stuck with him since it is my Gral. Contractor who has hired him. He's just trying to save money. Long story...
The stain was applied two days ago and it's scheduled to be sealed tomorrow. Is there a way to make sure the stain has dried thoroughly?

I think we'll be Ok after all.

Thank You!!!! Again.
