Do I understand correctly that 3/8" gap would be sufficient on all sides if the planks are oriented along the length?

The wood is 2.5" wide 3/4" Brazilian Cherry.

Perpendicular wise it's not an issue. Across the face/width is where it expands. I'd shoot for 1/2 inch but I've seen guys get away with less.

Best to follow manufacturers guideline for expansion gap.
