Or you could hand scrape it and then use Rubio Monocoat on it, easy. :P

Thanks for the 150 grit idea.

What pole sand paper (or mesh) should I use to scour the poly between coats?
Do you recommend vacuuming between poly coats?

Is a ShopVac (with internal bag) good enough?
Or will it create too much dust in the air that will eventually fall into the poly?

Our previous contractor used a professional backpack vacuum.

We sanded the floors with the drum sander and edger using: drum 36, edge 36, drum 60, edge 60, drum 80, edge 80
That edger is a pain to use. It is very strong and hard to tell how well it is sanding/blending.
The drum sander is pretty easy to use, but I can see how it is easy to screw up the floors using 36 grit.
You really need to get the feel for feathering the drum to the floor when you engage it and disengage it.

We stained the floors with Olympic low VOC Dark Walnut stain, because my wife couldn't wait to get the high VOC stuff.
It was like painting the floor with pudding. The stain went on almost like black paint. You couldn't see the wood at all!
After you wipe it off (lots to wipe off), the color looks great! We went through a LOT of rags.
I guess the low VOC is harder to apply and remove, but it still looks good and doesn't stink that bad.
The can says it dries in 4 hours, but we let it sit overnight for about 12 hours.

We then applied our Olympic oil polyurethane (high voc from Kentucky :)). We used a lambs wool applicator and a paint tray.
We soaked the wool head in mineral spirits (like the package says) and rubber the excess out with paper towels.
The poly went on great and dried in about 4 hours. We waited 8-10 hours before we screened with 180grit on a pole sander.
We then vacuumed the floor with the shopvac and tack clothed the rest. We then applied another coat of poly.
The high VOC poly stinks pretty bad. We had headaches since we slept in the house.
We have 1 more sscreen and coat of poly tonight, then we should be done!

As expected, my sanding wasn't very good in a lot of places.
We have the picture frame effect in some areas, but they should be hidden by furniture.
When the poly was wet, you could see some drum sander marks, but after the satin finish dries, you can't see them.
We also have a bunch of swirl marks, but my wife says I am being picky and it looks great.
I think a final buffing with an oribtal buffer and 100grit would have remove a LOT of out problems (blending from edge to field and swirl marks from edger).

I will post final pics soon.

We used 3 coats of satin finish.

It is darker in the photos because of the bad lighting.
It is definitely dark, but just not as much as the photos show.

We love it!
