HELLO GROUP, A LOCAL OLD TIMER WHO USED TO DO ALOT OF HARDWOOD AND CARPET INSTALLS CAME BY MY NEW HOUSE AND SAID THAT THE 5/8 INCH CHIPBOARD SUBFLOOR OVER MY 3/4 INCH PLYWOOD WOULD BE SUITABLE FOR STAPLE OR NAIL INSTALL OF 3/4 INCH SOLID HARDWOOD.
ANYONE HAVE A COMMENT ON THIS OR SHOULD I RIP UP THE CHIP BOARD AND GO RIGHT TO THE PLYWOOD UNDER IT. THE HOUSE WAS BUILT IN 1964 AND THE CHIPBOARD IS REAL SOLID ON THE PL;YWOOD.
THANKS FOR ANY INFO :D

That is particle board and needs to be removed. You are fortunate to have a 3/4" plywood subfloor underneath, most times it is 1/2 CDX with no T&G . You should be able to install the flooring right over the 3/4 if it's in good shape, and after the PB has been removed.

Here ia a section on the NOFMA website that deals with some installation issues and questions. And about installing over particle board.

I have the same garbage under my carpet, and the wood flooring specialist who would lay the floor said he would not be interested in ripping out the underlayment when we found out it is glued down(1983 house). I guess he has a ton of work and he feels this is work he does not need.

How difficult is it as I will now have to do it myself or use some kinda engineered to minimize the flooring height differences with the counter and range and tight fit of the fridge. I am not to fond of that idea.

Also, the engineered would be more costly as he works for 4.65 to install, sand and finish with traffic. Less for cash. Anyone use Aacer flooring?

Thank you in advance.

Thanks to Jerry and Gary for helping me out with my glued down underlayment on a different less appropriate post.
Jerry, I did cut another square underneath the fridge where there is plywood in the kitchen and dinette for the vinyl verus PB for carpet.
Popped right out like I hoped, but the plywood sheared and it is obvious the underlayment is troweled on with glue also. My cuts were plenty deep.

I will call the other estimate I got who quoted me 1.70 a foot to remove the underlayment and was willing to do so, and let him know he might of underbid the project or miscalculated his approach. But yes I believe you to remove the subfloor is not realistic. Sanding down to the plywood subfloor sounds brutal also.

The woodfloorpro talked to me about raising the cabinets/countertop so the dishwasher and range and fridge would work but the GC's thought this was a bad idea with the style of cabinets I have. I just would rather go with 3/4 than engineered IMO.

Apologies to Rafel for walking on his post. Many thanks
Bruce
