Hi all,

First off, I live in Helena, Montana and purchased a 1909 home.
Just removed carpets, vinyl tile and linoleum tile to unveal the floors located here:
http://www.thecenturyhouse.blogspot.com

All the flooring in the three rooms is the same type. I'm curious to what it is. The strips are approx. 2 1/4" and in some cases extend from end of room to end of room.

Thanks a bunch!!

What a neat old house! Need a close-up of the wood. Could be domestic hardwood that grew around them parts or from farther east.

The flooring appears to be fir which was commonly used in the area we have finished several floor in Helena that were fir. Would be good to see a closeup picture to be sure.

I think it may be maple. The color that you are seeing is that of some old shellac. Shellac made all species look that ugly orange color. It might not be able to be identified until you do a bit of sanding. The sanding will be a pain. Shellac eats up sanding discs/belts. May be best to use a chemical stripper and floor scraper before starting to sand. It could save a lot of money in sand paper.

It is definitely not oak and I don't see enough attrributes of hard maple. While it could be soft maple my guess is one of the indiginous fir varieties, such as Douglas Fir , Ponderosa pine or Lodgepole pine, or even Larch. There are about a dozen varieties of conifers in Montana / Idaho and these are the most common.
